LITHUANIA

About 20 years ago I went to Lithuania. I had been there before and was surprised that I was able to communicate with them in the Russian language. And I decided that if I ever returned to Lithuania, I would do evangelism.

I did return and I did do evangelism. I went out onto a street in city center with lots of foot traffic. I set up a display for Bibles and Christian literature. Then I waited for more than an hour to engage someone in conversation. Many people walked by, looked at my display and continued without saying a word.

Finally a lady approached and spoke to me in Russian. She said no one in Lithuania wanted anything to do with my Russian Bibles and literature. I told her it was all that I had.

She told me if I wanted to distribute Bibles and Christian literature that I should offer such material in their language. And if I wanted to do evangelism in their country to learn their language.

All I could do was nod in agreement as she turned and walked away. That pretty much put an end to my evangelistic efforts in Lithuania. I was having enough difficulty learning a second language and knew that a third language, was for me, impossible.

CAMERON TOWNSEND

About 100 years ago (1917) a young man by the name of Cameron Townsend was in college. He used his summer break to go to Guatemala to sell Spanish Bibles. The only problem was the people in Guatemala spoke Cakchiquel, a language without a Bible. It took him 14 years to translate the New Testament into their language.

The translation process that started in Guatemala turned into a translation movement.

BIBLE TRANSLATION TODAY

Today there is an alliance of over 100 agencies and organizations committed to translating the scriptures into languages that still do not have God’s Word available to them.

Wycliffe Bible Translators is a faith based organization – each person working within this alliance is required to raise their own support. Please partner with us in this effort so everyone can have God’s Word in a language they clearly understand.

The Worldwide Status of Bible Translation:

• At least 7,000 languages are spoken or signed around the world.
• At least 1.5 billion people do not have the full Bible in their language — that’s more people than the entire continent of Africa!
• At least 1,600 languages have access to the New Testament and some portions of Scripture in their language.
• More than 700 languages have the complete translated Bible.
• At least 1,800 languages still need a Bible translation started.
• Work is being done in more than 2,200 languages worldwide and over 2,100 of these projects involve Wycliffe Global Alliance partners.
