ISAIAH 9:6-7

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

In the ninth chapter of this book the prophet Isaiah received incredible news about the things God has in store for His people. The first five verses tell us there will be deliverance from  darkness, and relief from heavy burdens. And that there would be reasons for great joy and rejoicing.

Our text above tells us exactly how God planned to accomplish these things – a child would be born, the very Son of God would take on flesh. And quite literally the accomplishment of every promise of God would be dependent on that child.

The book of Luke, chapter 2 tells us of the birth of this child. His name is Jesus Christ. He came at the appropriate time – when the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son, born of a woman (Mary), born under the law to redeem all those who were born under the unforgiving law, that we might be adopted into His family.

Jesus met the just demands of God’s righteous laws, then offered Himself as a satisfactory sacrifice so that we could be forgiven, redeemed, and set free.

Yes, God did this for us – He gave us His Son. But the end of the seventh verse tells us all this would be accomplished by His zeal, or passion. God was absolutely passionate about giving His Son to provide for our needs. This means He would do everything in His power to make it happen.

His zeal, His passion means it would be done and nothing could or would prevent it from happening.

God is passionate about offering everyone the greatest gift that has ever been given. He is saying, “Please receive my gift, my Son. Please accept Him.”

He won’t force you to receive His gift. That is your choice.

Merry Christmas!
